Amish/Mennonite Martini & Ancestor Stir Stick with Hair Covering & Hair/Bun Pins 7" (martini glass) x 4" x 66"
Private Collection "I was invited to participate in a martini show, with each artist given a commercially-made stainless steel martini glass to alter or embellish. Initially, this piece was to be very simple. As I worked on it I realized the theme was becoming much more involved, snowballing into family history and how much the present is influenced by the past. Such as partying and having the ancestors twining around me with tendrils of moderation, temperance, humbleness, and being "contained"; not excessive. I love both the frugal and the excessive. As the idea and piece became bigger, there were no shortcuts to take, because that would have defeated the purpose of creating the piece. Incorporated are elements of Amish and Mennonite culture, such as the clothing snaps, Amish hair covering fabric, and photograph, as well as the pierced design which reminded me of the pattern of Mennonite hair covering net fabric. Combined with a gold highheel shoe tip and fancy glass buttons of popular culture."
