Silversmithing Mentor with an Emphasis on Bezel Fabrication and Stonesetting: Middle School Student from Albuquerque Public Schools: Albuquerque NM
30 hours of private studio instruction, beginning with a trip to internationally-known local jewelry supply sources to choose silver, stones and gems and ending with a portfolio photo session (portrait and metalwork) in a professional photography studio. Design and fabrication of 2 sterling silver rings (half-round wire and sheet), 1 asymmetrical tumbled stone pendant, 5 sterling and fine silver bezel cups for symmetrical and asymmetrical cabochons, and 1 sterling silver wire pendant containing an opalite sphere which involved the use of a copper prototype to decide on silver design and construction. Techniques learned: translating design into form, acetylene torch silver soldering (hard, medium and easy), fluxing, sawing, filing, ring-sizing, bezel cup construction, raising stone to proper height, stone setting, jump rings, translating design into form, hand finishes using wire. |

Jewelry/Small Metals/Silversmithing Instructor for University of Alabama Internship Teach a 2 week individualized university-credit internship (60 hours of studio time in 10 days), beginning with an introduction to jewelry/small metals and moving through more advanced metalsmithing techniques, creative design, problem-solving, and safe studio practices. Prepare schedule, projects and budget. Student was introduced to internationally- known jewelry/lapidary supply sources and professionals located in Albuquerque. Specific stones and metal were chosen for further exploration in design, function, aesthetics, and techniques of silversmithing. Exposure to other jewelry students , artists, and professionals of all backgrounds and their work (via Open Studios, Workshops, Scheduled Visits, Site Visits), budget and business practices, technical resources and books, documentation of various techniques and works in-progress as well as professional documentation of the student at work, and a visit to a commercial large-scale metal fabrication shop was included. Discussion of safe studio set-up and acquisition of supplies, books and tools , and various future national and international educational venues for study to continue metalworking. Professional documention in a commercial photographer’s studio of the student and her work completed during the internship occurred as the last 2 hours of the internship, to create a portfolio. |

Soldering Expert: Teacher : Rio Grande Jewelry Supply, Albuquerque NM Teach 6 classes on acetylene torch high temperature silver soldering in a lecture-demonstration format in 2 days to many of Rio Grande Jewelry’s 330 Sales Associates and Manufacturing and Supply Team Members. Rio Grande is a leading international jewelry supply source for precious/semiprecious/base metal, stones, supplies, resources, and tools. Demos included preparing metal for soldering by sawing and filing, achieving a perfect fit/joint with use of pliers and hammers, cleaning the metal in preparation for soldering, proper fluxing, safe and successful use of the acetylene torch, wire and sheet high temperature silver solder (hard, medium and easy), sweat/butt/edge soldering, safe use of acid, ring mandrel and rawhide mallet forming, and question and answer. Geared toward sales associates who handle calls and orders from around the world. Videotaped to be used as an in-house educational tool. |
