Workshop: Intro to Jewelry/Small Metals
November 13 - 14, 9 am - 4 pm
Diener Studio: 500 Second Street, Albuquerque, NM

Limited to six: $105 (Harwood members $90)

This class is designed as an introduction to basic jewelry/metals techniques.  Beginning with a simple sterling ring band you will learn how to saw, size, file, form, set a cabochon stone, and solder using an acetylene torch. Emphasis will be placed on combining design and technique in order to create individualized wearable metal pieces. Prepare to be adorned! An $85 supply fee covers all tools, supplies, metal and stones to be used throughout the class.

Workshop: Intro to Etching Brass and Copper: Jewelry/Small Metals
December 11 - 12, 9 am - 4 pm
(Saturday, class meets 9 am - 1 pm: etching will
occur 1 - 4 pm without students present)

This workshop will cover a basic etching process that uses various simple resists and etches red brass, yellow brass and copper.  Students will draw, rubber stamp, and stencil various designs onto metal pieces.  the etchant will be used while students are not present in the studio.  The second day of the workshop, we will take the etched metals and apply a variety of basic jewelry/small metals techniques such as disc cutting, dapping, filing, sanding, hammering, and drilling, in order to create no-soldered wearable earrings, bracelets, pendants, and more.  Patina/oxidizing and a variety of hand finishes from satin to shiny will be covered. No pre-requisite jewelry/metals experience. Supply fee of $85. Please see cancellation policy for more information.

The fundamental techniques for the design and creation of handcrafted jewelry are taught in this class. Beginning with a series of sterling silver rings, you learn how to size, texture, chase, file, form, solder with an acetylene torch, hand-polish, and high-polish with a buffing machine. Through weekly demonstrations, students will learn the principles of sawing, piercing, soldering, filing, riveting, chasing, texturing, drilling, making jump rings, bezel-making/stone-setting, oxidizing, and various ways to polish and finish metal pieces.

This course is designed as a continuation of jewelry making experience, for those students who have completed the Beginning Jewelry/Metals class. We will focus on more complicated techniques in soldering and stone-setting, including odd-shaped bezels, incorporating found objects, and soldering pin findings. More advanced techniques such as marriage-of-metals and reticulation will be explored.

Open Studio
Open studio hours are available for those who have taken the Beginning Jewelry/Metals class and are interested in using the Diener Studio equipment, tools, and facility to create their own work in a positive, comfortable, and safety-minded environment. Saws, acetylene torch, solder/flux, foredom, buffing machine, rolling mill, hammers, disc cutter, stamping and dapping tools are among the equipment available for use.
