This 3-hour class is geared toward students with no, little, some, or a ton of metalsmithing/jewelrymaking experience! Adults and Teens (ages 16-19) are welcome. Students will work with sterling silver sheet, pattern wire and wire to create rings. This class includes all materials and a full range of tools and other supplies on hand. Techniques to be used are sizing, cutting, filing, shaping with pliers, acetylene torch silver soldering, hammering, oxidizing, and a variety of hand finishes from shiny to satin. Each student will leave class with a minimum of 2 Beautiful Sterling Silver Rings.

Using sterling silver, red and yellow brass, and copper sheet and wire, students will start and finish a variety of pieces.  No experience with metals is necessary.  Textures and patterns can be created with chasing tools and stamps.  Hammering metal creates beautiful earrings, pendants and rings.  Bracelets and bangles can be formed either with the use of the torch or without it.  Pins and earrings are formed by forging metal wire, or doming discs. We will explore many jewelry forms, techniques and possibilities.

The fundamental techniques for the design and creation of handcrafted jewelry are taught in this class. Beginning with a series of sterling silver rings, you learn how to size, texture, chase, file, form, solder with an acetylene torch, hand-polish, and high-polish with a buffing machine. Through weekly demonstrations, students will learn the principles of sawing, piercing, soldering, filing, riveting, chasing, texturing, drilling, making jump rings, bezel-making/stone-setting, oxidizing, and various ways to polish and finish metal pieces.

CONTINUING JEWELRY/METALS
Mondays, June 15 through July 20, 6:30 pm – 9 pm
This course is designed as a continuation of jewelry making experience, for those students who have completed the Beginning Jewelry/Metals class. We will focus on more complicated techniques in soldering and stone-setting, including odd-shaped bezels, incorporating found objects, and soldering pin findings. More advanced techniques such as marriage-of-metals and reticulation will be explored.
